DIABETES

Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will typically experience polyuria (frequent urination), they will become increasingly thirsty (polydipsia) and hungry (polyphagia).

Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose which may over time lead to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. The prevalence of diabetes has been steadily increasing in the past few decades, in particular in low- and middle-income countries. Knowledge exists to reverse this trend through targeted prevention and appropriate care.

Key findings from WHO’s “Global report on diabetes”
Among the key findings from the “Global report on diabetes” are:
  • The number of people living with diabetes and its prevalence are growing in all regions of the world. In 2014, 422 million adults (or 8.5% of the population) had diabetes, compared with 108 million (4.7%) in 1980.
  • The epidemic of diabetes has major health and socioeconomic impacts, especially in developing countries.
  • In 2014, more than 1 in 3 adults aged over 18 years were overweight and more than one in 10 were obese.
  • The complications of diabetes can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputation. For example, rates of lower limb amputation are 10 to 20 times higher for people with diabetes.
  • Diabetes caused 1.5 million deaths in 2012. Higher-than-optimal blood glucose caused an additional 2.2 million deaths by increasing the risks of cardiovascular and other diseases.
  • Many of these deaths (43%) occur prematurely, before the age of 70 years, and are largely preventable through adoption of policies to create supportive environments for healthy lifestyles and better detection and treatment of the disease.
  • Good management includes use of a small set of generic medicines; interventions to promote healthy lifestyles; patient education to facilitate self-care; and regular screening for early detection and treatment of complications.
    Global commitments to reduce diabetes
“Many cases of diabetes can be prevented, and measures exist to detect and manage the condition, improving the odds that people with diabetes live long and healthy lives,” says Dr Oleg Chestnov, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for NCDs and Mental Health. “But change greatly depends on governments doing more, including by implementing global commitments to address diabetes and other NCDs.”
These include meeting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.4, which calls for reducing premature death from NCDs, including diabetes, by 30% by 2030. Governments have also committed to achieving 4 time-bound national commitments set out in the 2014 UN General Assembly “Outcome Document on Noncommunicable Diseases”, and attaining the 9 global targets laid out in the WHO “Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs”, which include halting the rise in diabetes and obesity.
“Around 100 years after the insulin hormone was discovered, the “Global report on diabetes” shows that essential diabetes medicines and technologies, including insulin, needed for treatment are generally available in only 1 in 3 of the world’s poorest countries,” says Dr Etienne Krug, Director of WHO’s Department for the Management of NCDs, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention. “Access to insulin is a matter of life or death for many people with diabetes. Improving access to insulin and NCD medicines in general should be a priority.”
Global efforts are underway to make medicines, including for NCDs, more available and affordable. Commitments from world leaders, including the SDGs, the 2011 “UN Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases”, the 2014 UN General Assembly “Outcome Document on Noncommunicable Diseases”, and the work of the UN Secretary-General’s high-level panel on access to essential medicines are aimed at improving affordability and availability of essential drugs for people living with diabetes.
In Nigeria, About 5 million people are still living with diabetes, while more than 1.56 million cases of diabetes were recorded in 2015. Also, 40,815 deaths in adults due to diabetes were recorded.

FAMILY AND WORK

One day you suddenly realize that your work has been becoming your life for a long time. When was the last time you spent time with your family, your friends or enjoyed your favorite hobbies? A lot of people spend a lifetime pursuing career success without understanding that it doesn’t necessarily guarantee a happy life. Work-life balance is definitely not a new concept, but it’s becoming the ultimate goal of more and more people, no matter who you are, a well-known billionaire entrepreneur or an entry-level employee.
Work-life balance helps us to become healthier, enjoy happier life and even work more productively than usual. So, how to strike work-life balance? Of course, there is no exact step-by-step approach for all of us; but hopefully these few tips will somewhat help you find the best way to strike a balance between work and life.

Women & Heart Disease

Heart Disease: Scope and Impact 1

  • Heart disease (which includes Heart Disease, Stroke and other Cardiovascular Diseases) is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, killing nearly 787,000 people alone in 2011.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most racial/ethnic groups in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics and Whites. For Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders and American Indians or Alaska Natives, heart disease is second only to cancer.
  • Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives than all forms of cancer combined.
  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing nearly 380,000 people annually.
  • In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds. Every 60 seconds, someone in the United States dies from a heart disease-related event.
  • About 720,000 people in the U.S. suffer heart attacks each year. Of these, 515,000 are a first heart attack and 205,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.
  • n 2011, about 326,200 people experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the United States. Of those treated by emergency medical services, 10.6 percent survived. Of the 19,300 bystander-witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the same year, 31.4 percent survived.
  • Direct and indirect costs of heart disease total more than $320.1 billion. That includes health expenditures and lost productivity.

Morning prayers

1. "Lord, may nothing separate me from You today. Teach me how to choose only Your way today so each step will lead me closer to You. Help me walk by the Word and not my feelings. Help me to keep my heart pure and undivided. Protect me from my own careless thoughts, words, and actions. And keep me from being distracted by MY wants, MY desires, MY thoughts on how things should be. Help me to embrace what comes my way as an opportunity... rather than a personal inconvenience. And finally, help me to rest in the truth of Psalm 86:13, 'Great is your love toward me.' You already see the ways I will fall short and mess up. But right now, I consciously tuck Your whisper of absolute love for me into the deepest part of my heart. I recognize Your love for me is not based on my performance. You love me warts and all. That's amazing. But what's most amazing is that the Savior of the world would desire a few minutes with me this morning. Lord, help me to forever remember what a gift it is to sit with You like this. Amen."

Alcohol: If you drink, keep it moderate

Moderate alcohol use has possible health benefits, but it's not risk-free.

It sounds like a mixed message: Drinking alcohol may offer some health benefits, especially for your heart. On the other hand, too much alcohol may increase your risk of health problems and damage your heart.
When it comes to alcohol, the key is moderation. Certainly, you don't have to drink any alcohol, and if you currently don't drink, don't start drinking for the possible health benefits. In some cases, it's safest to avoid alcohol entirely — the possible benefits don't outweigh the risks.
Here's a closer look at the connection between alcohol and your health.

Healthy Eating

A healthy diet may help to prevent certain long-term (chronic) diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. It may also help to reduce your risk of developing some cancers and help you to keep a healthy weight. This leaflet explains the principles of a healthy diet. It is general advice for most people. The advice may be different for certain groups of people, including pregnant women, people with certain health problems or those with special dietary requirements.

Heart diseases: Risk factors and prevention

‘CVDs are leading causes of deaths globally’
By Azoma Chikwe

The human heart is an organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes.
If the heart is not able to supply blood to the organs and tissues, they’ll die.
In humans, the heart is roughly the size of a large fist and weighs between 10 and 12 ounces (280 to 340 grams) in men and eight to 10 ounces (230 to 280 grams) in women, according to experts/
The heart has four chambers: two upper chambers ,the atria, and two lower ones, the ventricles. The right atrium and right ventricle make up the “right heart,” and the left atrium and left ventricle make up the “left heart.” A wall of muscle called the septum separates the two sides of the organ.
A double-walled sac called the pericardium encases the heart, which serves to protect the heart and anchor it inside the chest. Between the outer and inner layer, runs pericardial fluid, which lubricates the heart during contractions and movements of the lungs and diaphragm.

#PayFalcons: We were ordered out of the hotel the night we won the Competition – Super Falcons

The Super Falcons, in a meeting with the Senate Committee on Sports on Wednesday in Abuja recounted how they were treated unfairly by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during their time in Cameroon where they won the 10th African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).
Captain of the Falcons, Rita Chikwelu, explaining their ordeal, she said they were ordered out of the hotel at Douala in Cameroon the very night they won the competition.
She said this led them to sleeping at the airport with the competition’s trophy they won by beating hosts Cameroon 1-0 on December 3.
“Officials of NFF did not encourage us at all in Cameroon. We never saw the NFF President (Amaju Pinnick) and General Secretary (Mohammed Sanusi) in Yaounde when we played in the semi-finals. Surprisingly, we saw them in the crowd at Douala where we played the final match and having won that night they asked us to leave.’’
senate-sports-comm-meets-super-falcons2
The Sports Committee assured the players of payment of their outstanding allowances, adding that the NFF will be thoroughly investigated.Chairman of the Committee, Obinna Ogba, told the players that the Senate was committed to ensuring that their allowances were paid.
The meeting with the Falcons followed a protest march staged by the Falcons requesting payment of their outstanding allowances.
“Let me inform you that my Committee has been mandated to investigate activities of the NFF with regards to the face-off. I assure you that having made the nation proud, you will be paid.”
Also speaking, Samuel Anyanwu, a member of the Committee, expressed dissatisfaction with the manner the players were treated, and called for patience to enable the Committee to step in.
“I feel very hurt at the behaviour of the NFF, which should have been better in view of your feat. You should be patient and guard your utterances so that we can do something about this case. The Senate will investigate activities of NFF, because this type of issue has been a recurring decimal in the federation,’’ he added.

Nobody can freeze MMM, it will get stronger in January

The news that MMM which has been labelled a ponzi scheme, has crashed, has stirred very great upheaval on social media, even as many who have invested alot in the scheme have been reacting.
Below are reactions of Nigerians to the issue of freezing and crashing of MMM.
Nobody can freeze MMM, it will get stronger in January
Nobody can freeze MMM, it will get stronger in January
Prince Emeka said: "Those that didn't put their money in mmm are crying more than those that put their money in mmm. And I ask, what concerns non participants in mmm? you are not brave enough to take risk, still you are laughing like coward at those taking risk with their own personal money. Nigerians are so heartless, always happy to see downfall of their fellow human. #tufiakwa.
Frank Teke said: "MMM is coming back stronger by January. The single fact that the site is still accessible is enough evidence that the short break in active service is justified. A crashed site will not avail you any prior knowledge. Nigerian's keep calm and trust God it shall be back. The reasons for the short break in my view is convincing enough for every doubting Thomas. Though MMM wil expire someday as nofin is permanent. Human life itself is temporal. Nofin lasts forever."
Kehinde Oluwadamilola Bamiro said: "Has MMM promised and failed before? Compare it to FG promises and use the result as my answer."
Justine Kenechi Enemuo said: "Nothing is happening to Mmm, i believe the system is working effectively and I even PH yesterday when i got the news bcuz it the best time to Ph for people that understands the Mmm ideology well"
Markus Sunday said: "Hahahahahaaa! I can now see that 50% of Nigerians are mmm participants. Am not wishing it to crash but they said mmm is demonic¤ any way, just shine your eye well, well. You know all these get money quick systems do not last and the beneficiaries is always rating 20 and loosers 80 so wise up...."

Find out How Toke Makinwa’s “On Becoming” Broke Nigeria’s Internet on #LiterallyWhatsHo

Toke MakinwaThis past weekend, the Okadabooks one month book sales records was shattered in less than one day and it wasn’t because of another set of photo-shopped nudes. Nope.
This time, the craziness was over the juicy and sometimes scandalous details in On Becoming, the first book from media personality Toke Makinwa. After reading the book, many women (and men) developed mad, murderous glints in their eyes. Comment sections on blogs spawned solidarity groups spewing pity, indifference and hate over her experience.
Through the fracas, Makinwa has been silent, just like she was when the scandal the book is based on happened …

Mothers Love knows no Bounds

A Mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity.It dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.

Mothers are like glue. Even when you can't see them, they're still holding the family together.

A mother is one to whom you hurry when you are troubled

I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life

When You Need Encouragement
Lord, I thank you for the children you have given me. I thank you for the privilege of allowing me to be their mother. But Lord, I’m tired. I’m worn down. Please give me the strength to get through this day. I remind myself of the promise you have made me that if I cast my burdens on you, you will give me strength. I also hold fast to the promise in Psalm 30:5 that JOY will come in the morning. Thank you, Lord, for Your grace and mercy. Amen. Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you ~1 Peter 5:7
For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.~Psalm 30:5

Marriage is not a fairy tale(B)

Marriage is Not a Fairy Tale(B).by Jewell R. Powell
Change Your Marriage by Changing Your Expectations
Lewis and I dated for four years before we got married, and I knew without a shadow of doubt that my marriage was ordained by God. When we went through the storm, I still knew in my heart that Lewis was the man for me, but the devil kept whispering, "You can do better. You don't have to take this." I thought, "I was all right before I met him, and I will be all right when he is gone." My thoughts were stupid. I couldn't do better because I had the best man for me. We all want the fairy-tale marriage, which is having a perfect man (or woman) without flaws and a perfect life without challenges. That is not reality. Although Lewis is not perfect, he is the perfect person for me. And I am not perfect either. I may be a perfectionist, but I am not perfect. I hope you can face that truth about yourself as well, and say it out loud: "I, [fill in your name], am not perfect and neither is [fill in your spouse's name]." Good! Hopefully, confessing it will be a start to a "happily ever after" marriage.

Praying for your husband

As a wife, you have been given the privilege of serving as a mighty prayer warrior for your husband. Yet sometimes, even when poised with the best of intentions, the task can feel overwhelming. You wonder: What should I pray? How should I pray? What prayers does he need right now?

“tell your mate the positive, and tell God the negative.” Take your concerns to God. Faithfully lift up your husband in prayer every day, and you will likely notice a transformation not only in him, but in yourself, as well.

Marriage is not a fairly tale.

Marriage is Not a Fairy Tale.(A) by Jewell R. Powell.
But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things. 1 Timothy 4:7-8
As I was growing up, I read all the fairy-tale stories like Sleeping Beauty, hoping to one day meet my prince and live happily ever after. Unfortunately, most fairy tales give us an unrealistic picture of what our life with the prince will be like. Cinderella met her prince at a ball, and then he came looking for her with a glass slipper.

Prayer

Prayer is the practice of the presence of God. It is the place where pride is abandoned, hope is lifted, and supplication is made. Prayer is the place of admitting our need, of adopting humility, and claiming dependence upon God. Prayer is the needful practice of the Christian. Prayer is the exercise of faith and hope. Prayer is the privilege of touching the heart of the Father through the Son of God, Jesus our Lord.
The Bible speaks much of prayer. But, sometimes, too often, we ignore prayer and seek to accomplish in the strength of our own wills those things that we desire to have or happen. For those of us who are too often guilty of this, we need to bow our knees, confess our sin, receive God's forgiveness, and beg that the will of the Lord be done above our own. God is sovereign and loving, and He knows what is best for us and others even if it doesn't always seem to make the most sense

I suppose that we can test our prayer life and dependence upon God by the peace or lack of peace in our hearts. In all things we are to seek the Lord and in His continued presence. Peace will surely be our gain.
